Discipline

Good discipline is neccssaiy for sound learning. At St. James the Great School children arc taught to respect people and property. Children need the framework of a settled daily routine where they can feel valued and secure. They need to understand clearly the boundaries of acceptable behaviour and examples of good behaviour are often pointed out to them. Qualities of helpfulness, honesty, politeness and courtesy are frequently encouraged.

Teachers use their judgement to act with the love and care of a wise parent. Where 'punishment' becomes necessary, it most often takes the form of loss of free time, such as break times. There is a clear chain of action, well understood by the children, whereby in the first instance the matter will be dealt with by the class teacher. If necessary a senior member of staff will be informed and the Headteacher involved. If there is special concern about a child's behaviour, parents will be informed and invited to come into school to discuss the matter. In line with national legislation corporal punishment is not used in school.

School rules are few, being clearly defined and based on common sense expectations of good behaviour. They are supplemented by class rules drawn up annually by each class.

The school is proud and protective of its excellent disciplinary record. Our children are regularly praised for their behaviour both in and out of school and have earned an excellent reputation. We all work hard and with the co-operation of parents, intend to maintain our well established good name.
