The School Curriculum
English
Our work is based on the five areas of the English National Curriculum:
speaking and listening, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting.
Children are encouraged to express themselves effectively in both spoken
and written form. As with all teaching, a wide range of strategies are
employed. Reading forms an essential part of our activities and we make
every effort to encourage children to beqome competent and fluent readers
who enjoy books. At St. James the Great core reading schemes are central
to the teaching of reading, as are both phonic and look-and-say approaches.
Handwriting is taught throughout the school leading to a fully joined
script at Year 2 and progresses to writing with a fountain pen in Years
3 and 4 depending upon individual progress.
